Hydro achieves a groundbreaking milestone with its Hydro CIRCAL recycled aluminium, boasting a documented carbon footprint of 1.9 kg CO2e/kg aluminium, down from 2.3 kg CO2e/kg. Pioneering advances in sourcing, sorting, and traceability of post-consumer aluminium scrap, Hydro CIRCAL is certified by DNV. The recent Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) showcases an average embodied footprint, solidifying Hydro's commitment to low-carbon aluminium production.
In a monumental stride towards sustainable aluminium production, Hydro announces a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of its Hydro CIRCAL recycled aluminium. Documented at 1.9 kg CO2e/kg aluminium, down from the previous 2.3 kg CO2e/kg, this achievement stems from innovations in sourcing, sorting, and traceability of post-consumer aluminium scrap.
Introduced in 2019, Hydro CIRCAL represents prime quality recycled aluminium, comprising a minimum of 75 percent recycled post-consumer scrap. Independently certified by DNV, this low-carbon aluminium is produced at Hydro's plants in Clervaux, Luxembourg, Azuqueca, Spain, and Wrexham, UK, along with three recyclers in the U.S.
Ingrid Guddal, Head of Recycling in Hydro Aluminium Metal, expresses pride in Hydro's commitment, stating, "Hydro CIRCAL has become a key part of our product portfolio. With the new EPD, we continue to deliver aluminium with a carbon footprint that will enable our most forward-leaning and demanding customers to deliver on their climate targets."
Hydro CIRCAL stands as a testament to Hydro's dedication to offering premium low-carbon aluminium. The company relentlessly pushes the boundaries of low-carbon aluminium through initiatives focused on decarbonization, utilizing cleaner energy, and embracing new technological developments.
The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) emphasizes the environmental progress achieved by Hydro CIRCAL, showcasing an average embodied footprint of 1.9 kg CO2e/kg aluminium. This accomplishment positions Hydro as a leader in providing sustainable solutions in the aluminium industry, meeting the demands of environmentally conscious partners and customers.
"In early 2023, we also delivered the first near-zero carbon footprint aluminium for the European building and construction market based on Hydro CIRCAL, with 100 percent post-consumer scrap content," highlights Ingrid Guddal.
Hydro, with an extensive recycling network spanning Europe, North America, and Brazil, integrates recycling growth into its strategic vision. With 30 recycling facilities, Hydro aims to diversify its portfolio of cast house products, collaborating with customers to advance the use of recycled materials and contribute to a more circular economy.
Hydro's accomplishment with Hydro CIRCAL reinforces its commitment to environmental stewardship in the aluminium industry. The documented reduction in carbon footprint exemplifies Hydro's dedication to providing sustainable, low-carbon products. As Hydro continues to push the boundaries of low-carbon aluminium, Hydro CIRCAL stands out as a flagship solution, offering a pathway towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
