US President Mr Joe Biden's nominee Ms Katherine Tai, whose parents immigrated to the US from Taiwan, was confirmed unanimously by the US Senate to serve as the US Trade Representative. Ms Tai was confirmed in a 98-0 vote in a rare show of bipartisan support among the evenly divided Senate; her nomination by President Biden to be US trade representative drew support from Democrats and Republicans alike. She has vowed to work for a US trade policy that benefits ordinary workers, not just big corporations and to work more closely with America’s allies to confront an increasingly assertive China Fluent in Mandarin, Ms Tai served several years as head of China enforcement at the trade representative’s office.
American Iron and Steel Institute President & CEO Mr Kevin Dempsey congratulated her by saying “The American steel industry congratulates Katherine Tai on her confirmation as the U.S. Trade Representative. Her experience, dedication and willingness to listen to the concerns of labor and industry will allow her to be a champion for trade policies that advance the interests of American manufacturers and their workers. We appreciate her recognition of the challenges facing our industry as a result of the ongoing global steel overcapacity crisis and her acknowledgement that this overcapacity is not just a China problem. We are also grateful for her commitment to using all of the tools available to conduct aggressive trade enforcement. These issues are critical to the future of the American steel industry and our workers. We look forward to working with her to address the trade challenges facing our industry.”
