ArcelorMittal Tubarão is the first industrial plant in the Americas and outside Europe to obtain certification for the sustainability of its operations by the standards of ResponsibleSteel, a world reference organization for responsible steel production. Before receiving the recognition, the unit, the largest plant of the ArcelorMittal Group in Brazil, located in the municipality of Serra underwent a rigorous audit procedure. With the certification, ArcelorMittal Tubarão wants customers in the industry and society to be sure that steel is produced responsibly at all stages. The certification is valid for three yearsIn 2019, ResponsibleSteel created a sustainability standard that includes 12 environmental, social and governance principles. The principles establish sustainability goals in relation to the availability of water resources, health and safety, stakeholder demands, human and labor rights and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, enabling high standards of sustainability in production and consumption to be met.Audit - Conducted by the independent consultancy DNV Brasil, the audit process consisted of gathering in-depth information on sustainable practices and fieldwork to collect evidence with visits to the industrial plant and interviews with stakeholders.Last year, three DNV Brasil auditors visited the plant to verify the compliance of operations and processes. In addition, the consultancy spoke with employees and outsourced workers, suppliers, representatives of public agencies, unions and residents around ArcelorMittal Tubarão for evaluations
