Nippon Steel pioneers an innovative, carbon-neutral process in steel production, integrating green technologies and sustainable inputs. A fusion of traditional and modern techniques aims to reduce carbon footprint, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly steel manufacturing.


In an age where sustainability and carbon neutrality are the buzzwords, Nippon Steel emerges as a trailblazer, devising an ambitious carbon-neutral process for steel production. The process is initiated with inputs like scrap, low-quality iron ore, and coking coal, all procured with a focus on stability and reasonable costs. Interestingly, while traditional inputs remain integral, the magic lies in the incorporation of three breakthrough green technologies. Ironmaking and steelmaking have conventionally followed the BF (Blast Furnace) and BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace) route. However, with sustainability at its core, Nippon Steel is exploring innovative pathways like hydrogen reduction in shaft furnaces and direct reduction of iron. Adding to the arsenal is the Hydrogen injection into the Blast Furnace, encompassing methods like COURSE50 and Super-COURSE50.

Furthermore, the production process sees a convergence of traditional and contemporary, with high-grade steel being produced in large Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs). These EAFs, powered by directly reduced iron, promise steel production that's as efficient as the conventional BF route.

As the process culminates, the resultant steel is routed through rolling mills, ensuring the final product retains the top-notch quality Nippon Steel is renowned for. However, the company acknowledges the undeniable need for a minimal amount of coking coal to maintain operational stability.

Lastly, recognizing that a truly carbon-neutral process isn't just about minimizing emissions but also about managing them, the firm emphasizes the importance of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage). This approach encapsulates methods like chemical treatments, biofixing, and underground storage, ensuring that the carbon released is effectively captured and stored or reused.
