China’s planning body National Development and Reform Commission announced that China will continue to reduce its crude steel output in 2022 and has set target to achieve a year-on-year decline of about 30 million tonnes in crude steel output in 2022. In addition, as regards development of steel production, the Chinese government will distinguish among regions, avoiding the “one size fits all” policy, for instance, reducing crude steel output in key regions, including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province and the surrounding areas, the Yangtze River Delta area, and the provinces of Shanxi and Shaanxi. Moreover, China will reduce the output of crude steel at steel enterprises with poor environmental protection performances, high energy consumption, and relatively backward technology and equipment. The National Development and Reform Commission would strictly implement requirements in line with energy consumption and environment controls while ensuring the steel sector's supply-side reform China achieved its annual target in 2021 by slashing steel output to 1.035 billion tonnes from 1.065 billion tonnes in 2020, logging its first annual drop in six years. China's first quarter crude steel production stood at 243.4 million tonnes, down 10.5% YoY
