Chinese Iron Ore & Steel Imports Export in Jan-Feb 2021

According to latest data of General Administration of Customs, China imported 181.5 million tonnes of iron ore in January and February ie average monthly rate of 90.8 million tonne, up by 2.8% YoY from 176.6 million tonnes in January-February 2020. China’s iron ore imports had increased by 9.5% in 2020 to 1.17 billion tonnes in comparison with 2019 ie ie average monthly rate of 97.5 million tonne

In the first two months, China exported 10.14 million tonnes of steel products, up 30% from first two months in 2020 while steel products imports rose 17.4% to 2.4 million tonnes. Chinese steel exports in 2020 fell by 16.5% to 53.68 million tonnes. On the other hand China imported 20.233 million tonnes of finished steel in 2020, up by 64% YoY. The figure excludes semi finished products imports, which reached about 18 million tonnes in 2021

Since 2020, China’s GACC also combined the data for January-February, to align with the common practice by the National Bureau of Statistics, as data collection and releases tend to be disrupted by the Chinese New Year holiday that usually falls in either of these two months
