Chinese steel producer Xiangtan Iron and Steel partnered with Primetals Technologies to modernize its automation systems. The upgrade, completed two weeks early, has significantly improved the quality of the steel plates produced at the mill in Xiangtan, Hunan province.

In a bid to elevate its product quality and modernize existing systems, Xiangtan Iron and Steel recently implemented a state-of-the-art automation system at its plate mill. The company enlisted the expertise of Primetals Technologies to oversee the extensive upgrade.

Surpassing expectations, Primetals Technologies received the final acceptance certificate two weeks ahead of schedule. The entire implementation process was wrapped up in just six weeks. Xiangtan Iron and Steel reported almost immediate improvements in product quality following the new system's rollout.

The new Level 2 automation system vastly improves the precision of key parameters like roll force and roll torque. This stabilizes the entire rolling process, especially when handling small lots and varying steel grades.

Intriguing components of the Level 2 system include Set Point Monitor and Path Keeper. The former synchronizes Level 1 and 2 systems for greater operational flexibility, while the latter ensures stable thickness levels and protects against erroneous data, enhancing the overall reliability of the system.

hese advanced modules not only improve the quality of the end product but also add a layer of safety by mitigating the risks associated with human error or unplanned events. This makes the process more robust and adaptable.

iangtan Iron and Steel has a broad market reach, supplying steel for industries ranging from shipbuilding to construction. The company boasts an annual production capacity of 12 million metric tons and employs around 10,400 people.

The company's steel products have been used in high-profile projects like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge and the Abu Dhabi International Airport, highlighting its global standing and commitment to quality.

The comprehensive automation upgrade at Xiangtan Iron and Steel's plate mill has yielded immediate and significant improvements in product quality. This project, completed ahead of schedule, serves as a testament to the organizational and technological prowess of both Xiangtan Iron and Steel and Primetals Technologies.
