Italian steel technology supplier Danieli’s steelmaking subsidiary Acciaierie Bertoli Safau’s executive board has approved EUR 600 million of investments in Italy and Croatia. For its headquarters in Cargnacco in Udine in Italy, it has approved an investment program of USD 400 million which includes a new electric furnace and a Danieli DigiMelter, driven by artificial intelligence and substantially net zero from environmental point of view. The ABS plant at Cargnacco will be the first in Europe to use solar energy for fusion thanks to the installation of approximately 160,000 square meters of panels on the roofs of the warehouses. In the meantime, by May this year, a line for the production of high quality balls used for grinding minerals is expected to go into production. It will be the most innovative and competitive facility of its kind in the world.

Acciaierie Bertoli Safau has also started a feasibility study for the expansion of production at its Sisak site in Croatia, where a new rolling mill will be installed for an investment of additional EUR 200 million to produce 2.5 million tonnes per year of quality steels in an environmentally sustainable way. This ambitious project for the Sisak ironworks will be realized over a three year period. This new investment venture in the Sisak ironworks should significantly transform production there, as the plants are now producing semi-finished products. After the construction of the new rolling mill is completed, Sisak's ABS will also sell those finished products, which will be a big step forward in terms of their further business.

The Danieli DigiMelter is a milestone in the history of the steel industry and replaces the conventional electric furnace.

Danieli decided to enter the investment venture of ABS in response to the sharp increase in demand for steel across Europe, and major changes on the global steel market, which began being felt before the war in Ukraine broke out. Following the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine, a complete turnaround and a return of steel production in the EU and the USA took place. Danieli has been encouraging research and development activities for years now, looking more deeply into so-called green steel, through carbon reduction, and even the preparation of the use of hydrogen in production, and over recent years, ABS has invested in the modernization of its production over one billion euros.
