Dillinger has completed a $26 million investment in upgrading its slab pusher furnace, enabling the production of the world's thickest slabs and supporting the growth of offshore wind projects. This advancement offers increased capacity, energy savings, and aligns with Dillinger's Pure Steel + sustainability concept.


Dillinger, a leading heavy plate manufacturer, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully upgrading its slab pusher furnace at the rolling mill, an investment totaling $26 million. This strategic enhancement positions Dillinger to produce ultra-heavy steel plates more efficiently, a critical component for offshore wind energy projects.

Dr. Peter Maagh, Dillinger's Chief Technology and Production Officer, emphasized the operational improvements, noting that the company can now directly heat 600-millimeter slabs—the thickest globally—in the pusher furnace. This capability marks a substantial increase in capacity over the former method using a bogie hearth furnace.

For customers, this translates into greater availability of large, heavy plates that minimize the need for welding seams. This efficiency not only bolsters the production of offshore foundations but also facilitates their installation. The modernized pusher furnace, coupled with a new edge milling machine, allows Dillinger to offer "prefabricated" plates for offshore wind projects.

CEO Stefan Rauber outlined the investment as part of Dillinger's commitment to the offshore wind sector, a rapidly growing market where the company aims to reinforce its leadership position. The refurbishment of the furnace was completed within a stringent three-month timeline, even with extensive modifications that reached down to the machine foundations. Beyond increasing slab thickness and weight, the modernized furnace achieves a notable reduction in energy consumption, saving 750 MWh of electricity annually—equivalent to the yearly usage of 250 households.
