Korea Times reported that South Korean steel maker Dongkuk Steel’s top managers could face criminal changes under the nation's industrial accident law following the death of a worker at the firm's Pohang plant, where an investigation is underway to see if management was negligent in safety resulting in the lethal accident and to see if the accident could be punishable under the Serious Accident Punishment Act.A Dongkuk Steel subcontractor employee in his 30s died while repairing a 20-meter crane. A joint on-site investigation by North Gyeongsang Police Agency's violent crime investigation unit, Ministry of Employment & Labor’s Daegu Regional Employment & Labor Office and the National Forensic Service is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.Another South Korean steel maker Hyundai Steel is also under Serious Accidents Punishment Act probe, after accidents at its steel mill in Dangjin in South Chungcheong Province on 2 March & at a factory in the western county of Yesan in South Chungcheong Province on 5 MarchSerious Accident Punishment Act, which went into effect on 27 January 2022, states that the owner or chief manager of a company, which has more than 50 full-time workers, can face jail time and the company can be fined, if a fatal industrial accident occurs at a worksite where the company has not taken sufficient safety measures.
