On November 1st, 2023, in Dubai, Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Steel Arkan, reaffirmed the company's commitment to minimizing their environmental footprint. He stated the organization's earnest endeavor to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, aligning with the broader strategic goals of the UAE.
Elaborating on the company's environmental initiatives, Al Remeithi highlighted their tree planting campaign. Around 11,500 trees have been strategically placed within the industrial precincts of their steel factories located in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi. This initiative equates to the neutralization of approximately 115 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Speaking on the long-term objectives, Al Remeithi informed that the company is steadfast in its ambition to curtail carbon emissions. By 2030, they aspire to reduce carbon emissions by 40% compared to figures from 2019, culminating in net-zero emissions by the year 2050.
"To materialize this ambition, we've delineated a comprehensive roadmap. It focuses on avenues like carbon capture and storage, leveraging green hydrogen, adoption of clean energy, recycling scrap, and enhancing energy efficiency," Al Remeithi stated. He also proudly mentioned that Emirates Steel Arkan's production processes now entail 45% less carbon compared to their competitors.
The innovative ES600 low-carbon reinforcement steel has a pivotal role in the company's sustainability agenda. The firm's aim is to decrease the iron consumption in construction ventures by 18% to 24%. Furthermore, they're in the developmental phase of establishing an integrated iron production complex in Abu Dhabi, which will bolster the global supply chain of low-carbon iron commodities.
Al Remeithi also shared insights on the upcoming 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). He confirmed Emirates Steel Arkan's proactive participation, with a focus on clean energy adoption, supply chain sustainability, the integration of circular economy models, energy efficiency augmentation, and innovation.
