India’s state owned specialty metal producer Mishra Dhatu Nigam’s Wide Plate Mill was inaugurated by Hon'ble President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu on 27 December 2022 with an investment of around INR 500 crore for rolling of slabs of various alloys at Hyderabad Plant. 3 meter width of the plate which can be rolled in newly commissioned mill makes it unique in world. Due to its very high capacity of rolling force, this mill can roll Ultra high strength steel to very low thickness. Technology for processing of super alloys plates has been established in very short span of time. MIDHANI has established the technology to produce high strength Titanium alloys for Space, Nuclear and Defence applications. MIDHANI had awarded two contracts to Danieli for design, manufacture, supply and installation of a complete, modern plate mill complex consisting of wide plate rolling mill and a modern plate treatment and finishing in 2017. The new wide plate mill will be able to process metal plates up to 3100mm wide in a large range of special alloys, including titanium, super-alloys stainless steel, HSLA steels, etc. A walking hearth-type reheating furnace will reheat the input slabs for rolling in the plate mill. The single-stand plate mill will be able to withstand a maximum roll separating force of 60,000 kN and will be designed with the most modern technological features, to produce high-quality plates in regard to dimensional accuracies as well as defect-free surfaces. Plate treatment and finishing facilities will consist of a dividing crop shear, plate leveler, roller hearth furnace and a continuous roller pressure-quenching machine. The leveler will operate with 11 rolls, suitable for processing the plates ranging from 5 to 50 mm thickness in hot and cold conditions. Heat treatment will be done at the roller hearth furnace and a new generation high-efficiency continuous roller pressure quenching machine. Electrical and automation systems for the entire plate mill complex were supplied by Danieli Automation and reheating and heat treatment plants by Danieli Centro Combustion. The Wide Plate Mill facility would meet the requirements of special steel plates for national strategic programs. The mill is expected to serve as a national facility for development of wide plates that would meet present & future requirements and would also facilitate import substitute. MIDHANI was incorporated in the year 1973 as Government of India Enterprise under the administrative control of Ministry of Defence. MIDHANI is one of the few modern metallurgical plants in the world manufacturing a wide range of Superalloys, Titanium, alloys, Special Steel etc. in various mill forms using state-of-the-art production facilities. MIDHANI has been playing a significant role in supplying materials to various strategic sectors like Space, Defence and Energy since its inception.
