The Structural Steel Research Group at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad has successfully hosted the first Indian Structural Steel Conference at IIT Hyderabad on 6 January 2022. The inaugural talk was given by Tata Steel’s MD & Global CEO Mr TV Narendran. This was followed by a talk by Institute for Steel Development & Growth’s Director General Mr PK MishraIIT Hyderabad has invited experts from all over the world, including Prof Leroy Gardner Imperial College London, Prof Ben Young HK PolyU, Prof V Kalyanaraman Emeritus IIT Madras, Prof Kim Rasmussen University of Sydney Australia, Prof Ron Ziemian Bucknell University USA, Prof Brian Uy University of Sydney Australia, Prof A R Santhakumar Anna University Chennai, Prof KH Tan Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Dr Tak-Ming Chan HK PolyU and Prof Eiki Yamaguchi KIT Japan and several leading industry experts from Tata Steel, AMNS India, JSW Steel, APL Apollo Steel Pipes, Mutyam Steel, Tata BlueScope, Agrima Roof & Facade Solutions, PEBS PENNAR, Kirby and to attend deliver a keynote talk at this conference. IIT Hyderabad Director Prof BS Murty said "The use of structural steel in India is very limited compared to the developed nations either due to lack of knowledge in structural steel design or outdated codal provisions. Therefore, it is necessary to invest more into the R&D sector to understand the science behind the behavior of structural steel in infrastructure applications. Industries should come forward to create chair professorships at leading institutes for both knowledge creation and dissemination of structural steel to make the new generation of structural engineers feel comfortable in the design of steel structures."
