Jindal Steel & Power Limited announced that it will install a rail wheel set manufacturing plant at its Raigarh facility in Chhattisgarh in collaboration with GIFLO Steel of Hungary. The plant will have an initial capacity of 25,000 wheel sets per year. JSPL Managing Director Mr VR Sharma said “Rail wheel set manufacturing plant will help Indian Railways to speed up the modernization of its Rail infrastructure by making available world-class rail wheels to realize the vision of Gati Shakti by the Government of India.”JSPL will also install a Rail forging unit for Asymmetric Rails which are used in Rail track switches, especially for high-speed train tracks. JSPL release says that JSPL is the only producer of Head Hardened Rail grades 1080 HH & 1175HT for a heavy axle load of more than 25 tonnes & high-speed application in the country. JSPL also produces Rails in grades R 260 and 880 for 60E1, ZU 1-60 & 60E1A1 profiles. JSPL has also supplied R350 HT Grade Rails for its overseas customers.Indian Railways has placed order for rail wheels for Vande Bharat Express trains with Steel Authority of India Ltd and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd to ensure that supplies of required 250,000 wheels for the 400 Vande Bharat Express trains Linke Hofmann Busch coaches over the next three years are not delayed. Ukraine based Interpipe had developed an improved wheel design for Indian Railways for passenger transport in accordance with the operating conditions in India in 2021 and was awarded order for 36,000 wheels. Interpipe’s NTRP already started supplies last year, but the war halted manufacturing of the wheels in Ukraine and the first batch of 128 wheels was especially transported from Ukraine to Romania by road required for the trials of two trains to be conducted in August were airlifted from Romania to Chennai and then sent to Hyderabad based Medha Servo Drives.
