Australian Crookwell Gazette reported that Australian Rail Track Corporation has signed AUD 292 million contracts with Liberty Primary Steel to supply rails for upgrades between Narrabri and Turrawan, a vital connection between Inland Rail and the Hunter Valley coal network and the Southern Highlands line in NSW. When completed in 2027, the Inland Rail will provide a freight connection linking Melbourne and Brisbane in a route through regional Victoria, NSW and Queensland.Liberty Primary Steel has previously supplied steel for Inland Rail, including contracts worth AUD 51 million for the Parkes to Narromine and Narrabri to North Star sections.Liberty Primary Steel is located at Whyalla in South Australia & produces billet for rolling in Liberty Steel and other manufacturing sites and for export, together with rail and structural steel products. Australia’s biggest integrated steelworks, it uses mainly magnetite iron ore-based feed, sourced from GFG Alliance’s SIMEC Mining iron ore mines in the region. The Liberty Primary Steel Whyalla Steelworks has a production capacity of 1.2 million tonne per annum of steel using a blast furnace steel making process. Approximately 65% of the steel produced is transferred by rail in billet form to InfraBuild Steel's Rod Bar and Wire business for further value-added processing, and the remaining steel is converted to finished products in the form of structural steel and rails through the Whyalla Structural Mill. Liberty Primary Steel Whyalla Steelworks has significant experience and expertise in the production of steel rail and steel sleeper systems in service to the Australian railway industry. A series of major investments in our facilities has resulted in the consistent manufacture of high-quality steel products.
