Jonathon Stormon, from Hexagon Consultants, takes over as interim CEO at the Materials Processing Institute following Chris McDonald's departure after nearly a decade. Chris, credited for saving the Institute from closure, will continue as a strategic advisor. The institute, renowned for innovation in steel technology and green initiatives, gears up for a new chapter under Jonathon's leadership.


The Materials Processing Institute has appointed Jonathon Stormon as its interim CEO, succeeding Chris McDonald, who held the position for almost ten years. This transition comes as Chris McDonald steps down to pursue a political career as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for Stockton North.

Jonathon Stormon, recognized for his leadership in interim management and transformative business projects across various sectors like manufacturing and engineering, brings 25 years of extensive experience. His previous role as Head of Transformation for Liberty Steel Europe adds valuable industry expertise to his new position.

While relinquishing day-to-day operations, Chris McDonald will continue as a strategic advisor. His invaluable contributions to the Institute, especially in steering it away from closure in 2014, will persist as he collaborates with the Council on strategic partnerships and stakeholder relationships.

Under Chris's leadership, the Institute transformed into a national and international hub for steel and metals innovation, advancing research in advanced materials, industrial decarbonization, digital technologies, and circular economy initiatives.

Jon Bolton, Chair of the Materials Processing Institute, praised Chris's transformative impact and welcomed Jonathon as the interim CEO, expressing confidence in his ability to maintain leadership continuity during the recruitment of a permanent successor.

Chris McDonald expressed pride in the Institute's achievements, particularly in nurturing steelmaking expertise post the Redcar steelworks closure and steering high-quality technology development for climate change mitigation and enhanced productivity in the metals sector.
