Russian steel maker Mechel Group's metal trading company Mechel Service has begun shipping 700 tonnes of rolled steel for the construction of the new Mirny airport in the Republic of Sakha in Yakutia in Russia. Beam, shaped and flat products produced by the Chelyabinsk Iron and Steel Works will be used in the manufacture of metal structures of the airport's main terminal.The new Mirny airport will provide air communication with the largest cities of Russia, and will also be an alternate airport on transcontinental routes from North America and Europe to Asia. The site for the construction of a new runway is located 6 kilometers east of the center of Mirny. The contractor is currently working on the embankment of the runway, apron, taxiways and patrol road. The construction of the majority of airfield infrastructure facilities at Mirny Airport is financed from the federal budget. Completion of the project and commissioning is planned for 2023.
