Mechel’s Izhstal plant has put into operation a line for turning hot-rolled steel with a diameter of up to 180 millimetres, which is widely demanded by aviation, auto, mechanical engineering and pipe manufacturers. The new equipment grinds wheels with a diameter of 60 to 180 mm from all steel grades smelted by the plant. Turned steel has a higher surface quality in comparison with hot rolled steel. This is a high-margin product. The plant has already shipped almost 390 tonnes of rounded wheels with diameters ranging from 120 to 180 mm. Among the customers are the Pipe Metallurgical Company, Uralvagonzavod, Kopeysk Machine Building Plant, Sukhoi holding and others. In addition, such products are exported.
In the near future, a straightening machine will be installed in the same technological chain with the turning line, which will also have a positive effect on the surface quality of the turned rolled products.
The plant also has three finishing lines for rolled products, producing turned metal in the range from 14 to 115 mm.
