Leading Russian miner & steel maker Metalloinvest has launched Blast Furnace 3 at Ural Steel following modernisation. Investment in the project amounted to almost RUB 3.9 billion. The advantage of the new Blast Furnaces 2 and 3 is the possibility of using a charge with up to 95% iron ore pellets. The annual pig iron production at Blast Furnace 3 will increase by 8% to more than 1 million tonnes per year.The application of a modern analysis and technological process control system helps determine the optimal operating mode and enables automatic control of the smelting process by controlling a variety of parameters. The applied lining technology and furnace cooling system allow the copper horizontal cooler to be promptly replaced in the event of burnout without a lengthy furnace shutdown.As part of the technical upgrade, a new pumping station for supplying purified water to the furnace cooling elements was constructed, which significantly increases their service life. Additionally, the electric bridge crane of the foundry yard, skip hoist, electric wagon weights, transfer car, foundry yard machines and electric pushers were replaced.The main processing equipment was supplied by Danieli Corus.
