Video footage shows that some parts of Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol Donetsk region of Ukraine has been heavily damaged as the city faces a siege from Russian forces. While there is no clarity on damage, it appears that coke oven area was hit. Azovstal General Director Mr Enver Tskitishvili said “The company was very competently put into hot canning, so it does not pose an environmental threat to the city. We have experience of starting businesses after a long shutdown. We will rebuild everything. Mariupol is Ukraine!”On the first day of the war, 24 February, Metinvest announced that some of the equipment at its Mariupol-based enterprises, Ilyich Steel and Azovstal, had been placed in hot conservation mode. This decision was taken to ensure the safety of employees and to protect the equipment. At Ilyich Steel and Azovstal in Mariupol, employees continue to work to ensure the essential function of the equipment and make sure there are no accidents.Mariupol is a city in south eastern Ukraine, situated on the north coast of the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kalmius River in the Pryazovia region. It incorporates Coke-Oven & By-Products Plant, Blast Furnace Shop, Basic Oxygen Furnace Shop, Rolling Complex including Blooming Mill, Plate Mill, Rail & Structural Mill, Heavy Section Mill and Rail Fasteners Shop. Production facilities of the enterprise allow producing 5.7 million tonnes of iron per year, 6.2 million tonnes of steel and 4.7 million tonnes of finished rolled products per year. It manufacturers high-quality rolled products with the thickness of 6-200 mm and width of 1500-3200 mm for shipbuilding, power engineering and special machine building, bridge construction, large diameter pipe manufacturing for arctic main gas and oil pipelines, off-shore structures. It also manufactures rails and rail fasteners.
