The sinter shop of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works produced 11.388 million tonnes of sinter in 2021. For MMK's sinter production, which will celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2022, this is a record figure since 1989. The sinter shop is part of the structure of mining and processing production, the first stage in MMK's technological cycle. It includes three sinter plants with a total capacity of 11.3 million tonnes of sinter per year. In recent years, sulfur trapping units Nos 2 and 3 have been reconstructed at sinter plants, which has made it possible to significantly reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide and suspended solids.

The most important event for the sinter production of Magnitka was the launch of sinter plant No 5 in 2019. The capacity of the new sinter plant is 5.5 million tons of high-quality stabilized chilled sinter per year. The project is part of MMK's strategy for the modernization of the first stage. The launch of the new sinter plant made it possible to provide MMK's blast furnace shop with high-quality raw materials produced using modern energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies.

After the commissioning of the sinter plant, the outdated equipment of sinter plant No 4 was decommissioned significantly reducing the environmental impact. As a result, dust emissions were reduced by 2 times (by 2,100 tons per year), sulfur oxide by 4 times (by 3,500 tons per year), and benzo[a]pyrene – by 16 times. Moreover, pollutant discharges into the circulating water supply system decreased by 600 tonnes per year, and technological waste in sludge storage No 2 decreased by 13,750 tonnes per year.
