Nippon Steel Corp will restart a blast furnace in Kashima in Ibaraki Prefecture in eastern Japan in late January next year, in response to a recovery in steel demand, mainly from the automobile industry.

With the resumption of operations at the No. 1 blast furnace in the Kashima Area of the company's East Nippon Works, the operating rate for Nippon Steel's steelworks in the country is expected to recover to some 90 pct of its total domestic capacity.
