Russian NLMK Group has become an industrial partner of leading European center of excellence for the development of advanced metallurgical processes K1-MET of Austria. In cooperation with the shareholders of K1-MET, Voestalpine Stahl, Primetals Technologies Austria, Montan-University of Leoben and the University of Linz, NLMK will implement projects for the efficient use and processing of secondary raw materials from metallurgical production. The first joint project between NLMK, Voestalpine and K1-MET, launched in 2021, is designed to develop a technology for processing zinc containing waste. The new technology will make it possible to separate zinc from iron containing materials in this raw material, thanks to which NLMK will be able to return thousands of tons of iron to the production cycle. An important environmental effect of this technology is the replacement of fossil raw materials with secondary resources, which reduces the amount of waste accumulation and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
