<p>The Tribune reported that National Mineral Development Corporation has surrendered limestone project at Arki in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh as the process to surrender the mining lease has begun. As per a decision taken at the 537th meeting of the NMDC, it was decided to close the limestone project at Arki and surrender the mining lease to the state government. The state government was apprised of the decision by the NMDC in August 2021. Officials recently verified the mine closure plan of the site submitted by the NMDC where no activity had been undertaken after the grant of the lease. Following its verification, the closure plan would be approved.</p><p>Arki reserves are rich in steel-grade limestone & dolomite. The Arki mine has deposits of about 100 million tonne of quality limestone. The project was granted to the NMDC in August 1991. Steel Authority of India Limited & National Mineral Development Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop the limestone mine at Arki in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh in 2009. The plan was to produce 3 million tonnes of limestone per annum. NMDC got conditional approval from the Environment and Forest Ministry in 2013</p>
