Russian pipe maker United Metallurgical Company has developed production of large-diameter pipes with an innovative two-layer epoxy coating for anti-corrosion protection of underground main pipelines. Products were manufactured by order of Transneft at the Vyksa OMK plant in the Nizhny Novgorod Region in Russia. The pipes have already been delivered to the customer's facility for construction and installation work and further testing at the pilot section of the Kuibyshev-Unecha-Mozyr-1 oil pipeline. The technology for applying an innovative coating to pipes at the OMK plant was developed and mastered by specialists from the OMK Engineering and Technology Center in Vyksa together with the Transneft Research Institute. The new coating is planned to be used as an alternative to three-layer polyethylene insulation. Conducted laboratory studies have confirmed the reliability of epoxy coatings and their advantages over polyethylene ones. In particular, they are more resistant to UV radiation and high temperatures of up to 80 degree Celsius. In addition, the production of raw materials for epoxy powder coatings is localized in Russia, due to which the cost of the final product may be more profitable compared to pipes with polyethylene insulation.
