Primetals Technologies secures a landmark deal with voestalpine to supply a cutting-edge Electric Arc Furnace for the production of green steel in Austria. The 180 metric ton EAF Ultimate, a cornerstone in voestalpine's "greentec steel" initiative, promises environmentally friendly steel production. Primetals' comprehensive solution integrates state-of-the-art automation, waste-heat recovery, and raw material flexibility. The project, scheduled for 2027, exemplifies a significant stride toward Austria's decarbonization goals, aligning with global efforts for sustainable steel production.

In a groundbreaking venture towards sustainable steel production, Primetals Technologies, a global leader in metallurgical plant solutions, has clinched a pivotal deal with voestalpine. The agreement entails the supply of an avant-garde Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) to be installed at voestalpine's Linz site in Austria, marking a transformative step in the realization of the "greentec steel" program.

Scheduled for startup in 2027, the 180 metric ton EAF Ultimate represents the latest generation of electric steelmaking plants. This project is at the forefront of voestalpine's ambitious decarbonization plan, intending to construct electric arc furnaces at both its Linz and Donawitz sites.

Primetals Technologies will deliver a holistic solution, encompassing the EAF Ultimate equipment, dedusting and waste-heat recovery systems, electrical grid stabilization, and advanced automation for process control. The order also includes the LiquiRob robotic system, enhancing efficiency and safety.

One of the standout features of the EAF Ultimate is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The heat recovery system efficiently converts waste heat into steam, promoting energy efficiency across the production units. Andreas Viehböck, Head of Upstream Technologies at Primetals Technologies, expresses enthusiasm for supporting voestalpine's journey toward carbon neutrality.

The automation system integrates the latest web-based DCS process control system, fostering seamless collaboration between engineering and operational teams. This state-of-the-art system ensures intuitive operation and provides superior support in maintenance-related aspects. The Level 2 automation system not only enhances process control but also enables the calculation of the carbon footprint—a crucial aspect in the pursuit of sustainable steel production.

Primetals Technologies' partnership with voestalpine represents a landmark moment in the steel industry's journey towards sustainability. The introduction of the EAF Ultimate, with its technological prowess and commitment to green steel production, aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the steelmaking process. This collaboration stands as a testament to the transformative power of cutting-edge technology in shaping a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for the steel industry.
