In a groundbreaking collaboration, Tata Steel Nederland and H&T Recharge have joined forces through a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to accelerate the development of state-of-the-art cylindrical cans for Li-ion batteries, specifically tailored for electric vehicle (EV) applications.

The evolution of cylindrical Li-ion batteries is advancing rapidly, with constant changes in battery cell compositions and sizes. Recognizing the need for innovative solutions, Tata Steel Plating, a specialized unit within Tata Steel Nederland focusing on metal-coated steels for battery applications, and H&T Rechargeable Solutions, the German entity of the H&T Recharge Division within the Heitkamp & Thumann Group, have come together to address these challenges.

Tata Steel will concentrate on developing sustainable materials, aligning with its strategy of providing value-adding steel solutions for a sustainable future. Ilja Portegies Zwart, Head of Technical, Packaging, and Plating, expresses the commitment to creating materials that enhance battery performance and enable efficient manufacturing.

H&T Recharge, with over 40 years of experience, is a global leader in battery component manufacturing. Dr. Daniel Weingarth, Global Technology Director at H&T Recharge, emphasizes the significance of utilizing Tata Steel Plating materials in downstream processes, enabling early involvement in product development and ensuring short development cycles.

Remco Blaauw, Managing Director Plating at Tata Steel Nederland, envisions Tata Steel Plating as the global leader in producing materials for rechargeable battery casings, extending their legacy of 40 years in primary batteries.

Tobias Ott, President of H&T Recharge, highlights the honor of collaborating with Tata Steel to develop advanced and sustainable battery can solutions for the growing EV market. The JDA aims to optimize materials, enhance manufacturing efficiency, and elevate overall battery performance.

Tata Steel Plating is exploring an expansion of manufacturing capabilities to deliver the next generation of coated steels for batteries up to 2030. Meanwhile, H&T Recharge, already the largest cylindrical can producer in the Western Hemisphere, plans to increase production capacity in Europe for next-generation batteries.
