Russian Coking Coal Samples Tested at Tata Steel
Press Trust of India reported Tata Steel has tested coking coal samples from Russia for making steel through the blast furnace route. Tata Steel Managing
Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr TV Narendran told PTI "We have imported some coking coal from Russia. The east coast of Russia is a good source. We support the government's initiative to look at Russia as a source. It is a good option for us to have. Otherwise we are over dependent on Australia. Australia also often has cyclone and weather issues. For many reasons, it is good for us to have more than one option. We have explored and tried out some material.”
The development assumes significance in Indian steel industry as a fruitful result of the experiment would break the monopoly of Australia in coking coal supply to India. India imports about 56 million tonnes of coking coal, about 45 million tonnes is imported from Australia alone. Besides Australia, part of coking coal demand is also met from South Africa, Canada and the US.
