According to media reports Steel Authority of India Limited, Bharat Forge and Ramkrishna Forgings in partnership with Titagarh Wagons have put their bids to set up steel forged wheel manufacturing units on behalf of national transporter Indian Railways for manufacturing 80,000 forged wheels annually for the Super-Fast Vande Bharat Express Trains The successful bidder will set up a production unit for forged wheels at an estimated cost of INR 1,000 crore. The Indian Railways has given assurance to buy a certain quantity of the wheels manufactured by the successful entity. The manufacturer will provide 40,000 wheels during the first year of supply, 60,000 wheels during the second year of supply, and 80,000 wheels per year during each of the subsequent years. The manufacturer will be allowed to export its production as well after catering the demand of Indian Railways. Indian Railways floated tenders in September 2022 for the first time to invite private players to build a wheel plant. The manufacturing and transport of wheels for the rakes were halted due to the Russia-Ukraine war and Indian Railway awarded Chinese maker TZ (Taizhong) Hong Kong International to supply 39,000 train wheels for INR 170 crores in May 2022 to be manufactured at Taiyuan Heavy Industry Railway Transit Equipment Company at Dianzi Steet in Taiyuan City of Shanxi in China.
