Salzgitter Produces Slab for Green Strip Steel

Salzgitter AG has successfully produced the first low CO2 green steel slab in the Peine steel mill. The Group will therefore be able to offer its customers

green strip steel products in differentiated dimensions and grades even before the end of 2020. The CO2 footprint of this product is 75% less than in the case of conventional production. Following the conversion of a continuous casting line, the keen interest in such materials can now be serviced. The slabs will subsequently be rolled into hot and cold strips at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. These environmentally compatible steel products can be deployed for all customary purposes, such as in vehicle construction, the building trade and in industrial applications.

Furthermore, together with partners Salzgitter is intensively working on switching steel production to a low CO2, hydrogen-based process through our “SALCOS – Salzgitter Low CO2Steelmaking” innovation project, which will enable a reduction in CO2 of up to 95%.”
