This volume exceeded the company's cumulative result in shipments of CWP in 2018 and 2019 by 20%. Severstal was able to earn more than USD 31.5 million in addition, which also already exceeds the indicators for the entire 2019. At the same time, the share of innovative products in its portfolio has more than doubled and amounted to 8.7%.

Among the latest developments of Severstal are solutions for car manufacturers. Thus, using the developments of promising engineering, the company's experts substantiated the possibility and efficiency of using a new grade of strength class K600 for the production of truck frames for KAMAZ PJSC. A pilot batch of rolled metal has already been delivered to the client. K600 is a new generation of micro alloyed steels. This grade is distinguished by improved formability and fatigue properties. In other words, due to its more uniform and uniform cross-sectional structure, the K600 better withstands such operations as punching holes and flanging. In their process, cracks do not form on the metal, which can cause further destruction of the material. At the same time, such steels have a higher endurance limit. These properties can be achieved through a combination of rolling technology, straightening and chemical composition. The use of such steel will improve the manufacturability of metal processing and the performance characteristics of the client's products.

Another example is development for the passenger car industry. For Renault Russia, Severstal employees have mastered and presented ferrite-bainitic hot-rolled hot-dip galvanized steel in thicknesses over two millimetres. Its use allows the automaker to address the issues of reducing metal consumption while using more durable materials. Such rolled metal is characterized by a combination of technological methods: for its production, hot rolling, which forms the structure, and galvanizing, which is responsible for improving the properties of the product, are equally important. Ferrite bainitic hot rolled hot-dip galvanized steel can be used in the manufacture of side member’s vehicle safety elements. It also has high formability properties, in particular, it behaves well when knocking out and flanging holes. Now Severstal is the only company in Russia that has received approval for the supply of such rolled metal products. According to experts, the launch of a new continuous pickling unit No 4 will make it possible to produce this steel with unique geometric parameters.

According to the presentation of Russian Steel Association, Automotive industry’s demand on steel will fall by 21% this year in Russian Federation. Despite the total annual production capacity of the Russian car plants is equivalent to almost 3 million units, only 1.7 million vehicles have been manufactured in the country in 2019 and the number will shrink further to 1.5 million automobiles this year due to the pandemic. According to Rosstat data, passenger car production has shrunk by 25.9% year-on-year in Russia within the first nine months of 2020, to 848,000 units. Truck production was also down by 16.5% with 91,400 vehicles. Car body production also collapsed within the aforementioned period, by 89% to 19,000 units.

The main passenger car manufacturers in the Russian Federation are Avtovaz, Sollers Group, Avtotor, Renault Russia, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus, Nissan Manufacturing Rus, alongside the largest truck manufacturers: Kamaz, GAZ and Ural.es of products to customers in 10 months of 2020.
