Cherepovets headquartered Russian steel maker Severstal Digital specialists, together with the staff of the Upstream Technology Development Center and the metallurgical production of the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works have developed a model for controlling the moisture content of the sinter charge. The solution was implemented on sintering machines No 10 and 11 in the sinter shop No 3 of the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant. The algorithm made it possible to reduce fluctuations in the charge humidity by more than 2 times, thus increasing the productivity of the equipment, as well as to produce an additional volume of suitable sinter with increase of 2-8%, depending on the characteristics of the raw material and improve the quality of its sintering.

Previously, the water consumption in the pelletizers was controlled by the operator of the sintering machine, but it was quite difficult to calculate it accurately and promptly, which led to constant moisture drops up to +/- 0.5%. Thanks to the algorithm developed by Severstal specialists, the required charge moisture content is provided more accurately and the operator does not need to make regular manual calculations. He only needs to set the target humidity in the unit control system in accordance with the requirements of the process.
