<p>US steel maker Steel Dynamics Inc announced in a LinkedIn update that “Our first coil is produced from the melt shop through the caster, hot mill and coiler. 90,000 lbs melted, casted, and rolled through our 84 mill. Defining what it means to produce steel products that are melted and manufactured in the United States. Thank you to the team in Sinton, everyone across all SDI facilities, our vendors and customers. We are now a fully operational facility, from melt to paint and everything in between. This is just the beginning for our new Southwest-Sinton Division.”</p><p>When Sinton was chosen by SDI for the new mill in July 2019, the plant was expected to start up in mid-2021. The Covid-19 pandemic, which began in earnest in the US in March 2020, caused numerous delays from troubles finding labor to equipment. Weather also played a large role, with rain storms causing further delays in 2021.</p><p>SDI Sinton is ramping up production and its 3 million short ton per year complex will be able to produce hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil and hot-dipped galvanized products with at least six on-site processors with 1.8 million short ton per year. Sinton is expected to produce 2 million short ton of steel in 2022</p>
