Russian Pipe Metallurgical Company TMK has mastered a new drill pipe production technology with Radio Frequency Identification. The solution is used as an additional option and improves the consumer properties of the product. An RFID tag, an electronic device, is installed on drill pipes data from which can be read contactlessly using a stationary or portable device and appropriate software. Thanks to pipe inspection using RFID technology, users can set up automatic accounting of tool life, save the results of flaw detection, as well as the real history of the operation of each drill pipe. This makes it possible to predict pipe failure with great accuracy and to carry out repairs in advance.TMK produces drill pipes with RFID tags as part of the cooperation between the Sinar Pipe Plant SinTZ and the Orsk Machine-Building Plant OMZ, which are part of the company. At OMZ, a drill joint is manufactured, in which a landing socket slot of a strictly defined diameter and depth is made at the enterprise for setting a mark. Drill pipes are manufactured at SinTZ, to which locks supplied from OMZ are welded, equipped with RFID tags. The tags are placed in a capsule made of polymer material and are installed in the landing slot using a special technology. The device remains operational at temperatures from minus 50 degree Celsius to 110 degree Celsius, is recognized during precipitation, is resistant to oil products, drilling fluids and mechanical stress.
