TUV SUD Confirms Green Flat Steel from Salzgitter
Salzgitter AG expands its product range to include low CO2 steel grades as the first European steel manufacturer, Salzgitter AG received two declarations of conformity based on the VERIsteel process from TUV SUD. The procedure enables the verification of the product specific CO2 emissions in steel production and accompanies the process of decarbonisation. The low CO2 steel grades are produced in the Peine electric steelworks in combination with the rolling mills and galvanizing plants in Salzgitter. They meet with great interest from customers from various industries. Based on the data from 2018, TUV SUD has verified the accounting procedure for two process routes for the production of flat steel. A comparison of the two baselines shows that switching the steelmaking process from the conventional blast furnace route to the electric steel route results in a reduction of more than 75% in the CO2 balance of the slab and more than 66% in the CO2 balance of the hot-dip galvanized slab Coils is reached.
For proof of product-specific CO2Emissions, it is necessary to map all relevant processes and material flows. To this end, TUV SUD has developed the VERIsteel process based on DIN EN ISO & IEC 17029 and other international standards. With the first two statements of conformity according to this standard, the testing and certification service provider confirms the correct definition of the baseline for two process routes of Salzgitter AG.
