Volkswagen AG and Salzgitter AG have been in close partnership for more than 60 years. Now both want to open the next chapter together in the decarbonization of their processes and products. The companies have announced a joint declaration of intent that will make Volkswagen one of the first customers for the low-CO2 steel that Salzgitter AG intends to produce from the end of 2025 using a new production route at its headquarters in Lower Saxony. According to Salzgitter AG, on the basis of hydrogen and renewable energies, more than 95 percent of the CO2 emissions in steel production can be saved in the future. The Volkswagen Group is planning to reduce CO2 to use low-grade steel from the end of 2025 in important future projects such as the Trinity1 e-model, which will be produced in Wolfsburg from 2026.The cooperation between the two companies on green steel has already begun. Last year, Volkswagen AG processed sample quantities of CO2 -reduced steel from the Salzgitter Group for the first time. This is produced on the scrap-based electric steel route in Peine and has a 66 percent reduced CO2 footprint. Volkswagen is planning to purchase another 3,000 tonnes this year.Another part of the joint agreement is the goal of establishing a closed material cycle for steel between Volkswagen's main plant in Wolfsburg and the integrated steel works in Salzgitter. The Volkswagen Group is making the steel leftovers from production available to Salzgitter AG, which melts them down, processes them into new steel products and delivers them to Wolfsburg for car production. Efforts are being made to expand this "closed loop" for steel to other production sites of the Volkswagen Group. The Volkswagen Group, based in Wolfsburg, is one of the leading car manufacturers in the world and the largest car manufacturer in Europe. Ten core brands from seven European countries belong to the Group: Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, Cupra, SKODA, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The Volkswagen Group sells its vehicles in 153 countries. In 2021, worldwide deliveries of Group vehicles amounted to 8.9 million (2020: 9.3 million)
