H2 Green Steel and Svea Vind Offshore have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on electricity and hydrogen use. The deal enables H2 Green Steel to buy renewable electricity from Svea Vind Offshore's planned wind farm, supporting the steel company's green initiatives.
In a move that accelerates the drive towards sustainability, H2 Green Steel has signed a letter of intent with Svea Vind Offshore. The focus of this collaboration is on trading electricity and the utilization of hydrogen. H2 Green Steel will purchase a significant portion of its renewable electricity requirements from Svea Vind Offshore's planned wind farm in the Gulf of Bothnia.
This collaboration is part of H2 Green Steel's broader strategy to enhance its future factory in Boden, Norrbotten. "Green electricity is pivotal for producing green hydrogen, which in turn is essential for the production of green steel," says Luisa Orre, the Purchasing Manager at H2 Green Steel. The use of renewable energy is crucial for the company as it enters its second phase of production.
Svea Vind Offshore's planned wind farm, named Bores Krona, will be located off the archipelagos of Piteå and Luleå. It will consist of 128 turbines, each standing 350 meters high, and is projected to generate 12 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually. This will serve as a substantial source of energy for H2 Green Steel's operations.
Mattias Wärn, co-founder of Svea Vind Offshore, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. "Through this cooperation, we are creating the conditions for both maintaining and creating jobs," he stated. Svea Vind Offshore is currently working on 12 projects in Sweden, focusing on the development of offshore wind power.
The collaboration is expected to reduce H2 Green Steel's CO₂ emissions by up to 95% in its new production process, which will be operational by the end of 2025. This is a significant leap towards sustainable production, especially when compared to traditional steel manufacturing processes.
